Tesco Lattice Topped Mince Pies – 8/10

PIE OF THE YEAR CONTENDER KLAXON

Out of nowhere, Tesco’s Lattice Topped variety becomes our first Pie of the Year contender. Had we considered Pie of the Year to be a thing until now? No, but it seems like a good idea to crown one the ultimate winner and this could be the one!

A lot about this pie is standard. Standard filling, standard pastry, the lattice top being the key deviation from the norm, which strangely improves the structural integrity here. Despite not shouting “I’M A DEEP FILLED MINCE PIE, HONESTLY I AM” all over the packaging, this is a deep filled pie. The taste is solid, fruity sweetness and aromatic spice working in perfect balance, with a pastry that does it’s simple job well. The lattice on top further improves the experience and we’re a sprinkle of sugar away from a 9 here – 8/10.
